IMA Financial Group elevates KC president to key national position, names new local leader
IMA promotes Kansas City-based executive to lead its biggest revenue generator. The local office has a new president for the first time in seven years.

IMA Financial Group Inc. has named Patrick Lanning as the new leader of its Property and Casualty Division.
According to a ranking by Insurance Journal, IMA is America's 14th largest independent property and casualty insurance agency. According to the industry trade magazine, Denver-based IMA had $450 in P&C revenues in 2021 as well as $92 in other revenue.
Lanning remains in Kansas City. He was previously IMA's Kansas City Market Leader and President of Retail Specialties and Services.
He joined the company as vice president and manager of commercial lines in 2007. His LinkedIn profile states that he has been the Kansas City office manager for the last seven years.
Lanning worked as an account executive, then vice president, at Lockton Cos. in Kansas City, an independent insurance broker.
In his new position, he will be responsible for a P&C Division that manages annual premiums of more than $8 billion across an expanding national footprint.
IMA names new Kansas City leader
Clay Smith, who has a similar path to Lanning but is accelerated, became president of IMA’s Kansas City office.
Smith was appointed vice president of the company in 2019 after joining in 2017 as its leader for commercial lines. In April, he began his new position as the market manager for Kansas City and its 130 employees.
He spent six years as an assistant vice-president and account executive at Lockton before joining IMA. He has also worked as a State Farm Insurance financial services representative for three years.
Smith, identified as a “20 to Know” in insurance for 2021, has "been instrumental in IMA’s double-digit organic market growth," a spokesman stated in an email.
In his new position, he is responsible for overseeing all P&C activities and employee benefits in the region.
IMA ranked no.4 on the Kansas City Business Journal's most recent Property & Casualty Insurance Agencies List, with $190 million in P&C premium volume coming from area offices. The Kansas City Business Journal's latest Property & Casualty Insurance Agencies List ranked IMA No. The company ranked 11th in local premium volume for all lines of business, and 15th when it comes to life, health and benefit volume.
