The US consulting firm Bain & Company said that Chinese police had questioned employees at its Shanghai office amid growing tensions between the two world's largest economies.

Five of the local staff were detained by Chinese authorities after they closed down the Beijing offices Mintz Group, a corporate due diligence company based in America.

Bain's case was a mystery Thursday. The reason for the investigation, the nationality of the employees who were interviewed, and the status of the employees were all unknown.

Bain confirmed to CNN that Chinese authorities had questioned employees at our Shanghai office. We are cooperating with the Chinese authorities as necessary. We have no more comments at this time.
